Drop C tuning (C G C F A D)

Metalcore, post-hardcore and modern metal; bands such as Bullet for My Valentine and Killswitch Engage built songs on it.

Drop C is D standard with the sixth string dropped a further whole step to C. It is the Drop D idea moved two semitones lower: one-finger power chords on the bottom strings, with the whole guitar sitting in a heavier register.

The low C is a full two whole steps below standard E, which is as far as most people go on a regular-scale guitar with ordinary strings.

Tuning to Drop C in TuneGlass

  1. The app opens in 6-string guitar mode; if you changed the instrument, switch back in Settings.
  2. Tap any string circle to open the tuning editor and choose Drop C from the presets. Presets beyond the thickest string are part of TuneGlass Pro, a one-time purchase.
  3. Play one string at a time. The needle turns green and the scale fills when the string is in tune. Hold a string circle to hear its reference note.

Tips

  • Use heavier strings. 11s or a dedicated drop set keep the low C from flapping and help the tuner read a clear fundamental.
  • Tune the low C last and check it twice. Very low notes take a moment to settle on the needle; let the string ring rather than plucking repeatedly.
  • If the tuner keeps reading an octave high on the C, turn on Boost low E in TuneGlass settings.

Questions

How do you tune to Drop C?

Tune every string down a whole step to D standard (D G C F A D), then drop the sixth string another whole step to C.

Can I play Drop C with normal strings?

You can, but 9s and 10s get loose and buzzy. Most players move to 11s or a heavier bottom set.
